Abstract

We derived a concept for a four dimensional Required Navigation Performance (RNP) by extending the existing lateral RNP into the vertical and along-track dimensions. Based on the desired target safety level and traffic on a given route, an along track requirements can be formulated for the traffic using the airway. In the vertical, accuracy requirements at the 3σ level are already specified, however monitoring and alerting is not foreseen. We suggest a monitoring technology based on augmented satellite navigation. The vertical RNP requirement can be fulfilled with a system governed by a zero-mean Gaussian with σ=24.45 m. The required along- track accuracy depends on the number of aircraft occupying specific route and their respective speed. In order to reach a target level of safety of 5x10-9 with 10 aircraft/ hour, an accuracy of 2875 m is needed. This is equivalent to a required temporal accuracy of 13.5 s at 400kts.
