Abstract

We attempt to assess the resolution quality of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) using single-grid estimators. We perform a study of LES on successively refined meshes for turbulent channel flow at Re_tau=4800 and for flow over a backward-facing step at Re_h=37500. Refinement indicators (or sensors) based on (i) resolved turbulent kinetic energy and (ii) resolved turbulent shear stress are evaluated. LES on successively refined meshes shows a clear trend of ''convergence'' for mean and fluctuation velocity profiles and that the quality of spatial resolution can be assessed by these two sensors for attached boundary layers and for free-shear layers.
