Abstract

The DLR TAU code capabilities were extended for gradient-based shape optimization with free laminar-turbulent transition by incorporating the DLR gamma transition transport model coupled to the negative Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model to its adjoint solver. The implementation was verified on the transonic airfoil RAE 2822. The results reveal that transition must be included to avoid underoptimization and the relevance of the selected figure of merit on the optimization mechanism.
