Application platform for intelligent mobility (AIM) Reference track for V2X communication

Abstract

To test cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS), the Institute for Transportation Systems at DLR operates the large-scale research facility Anwendungsplattform Intelligente Mobilität (AIM)1 reference track in the Braunschweig area. Overall 46 intersections are equipped with Vehicle-2-X (V2X) communication technology. The research facility is embedded in the test field Lower Saxony (Testfeld Niedersachsen)2. (Köster 2017) This publication presents the current development status and consolidated experience of AIM. This includes the explanation of the system architecture, which enables an overall integration of V2X communication. Furthermore, it presents the V2X software framework, developed by DLR, which ensures the connection, integration and testing of C-ITS services in research and industrial projects. Available evaluation and analysis tools are also discussed, for example possibilities of visualizing all messages sent and received on AIM. Finally, the monitoring is also presented, which allows a continuous supervising of activities and thus the detection and troubleshooting of failures in subsystems at an early stage. Subsequently, the next planned development steps for AIM are presented. This concerns new issues resulting from the further development of the large-scale research facility for dual operation, specifically the creation of simultaneous research and operational business. In addition, issues related to hybrid communications and alternatives to the existing radio standard, will be discussed in relation to the reference test track.
