A Task-oriented Catalogue of Criteria for Driving Simulator Evaluation

Abstract

An often faced problem is the selection of an appropriate driving simulator. A low cost simulator might not be sufficient for obtaining the necessary results required to answer a given research question. Utilising an advanced driving simulator is often quite expensive and might be excessive in regards to the requirements of an experiment. Comprehensive assessment in terms of capabilities and limitations of available simulators is not obtainable as it is depending on the research question which shall be answered with the experiment. This paper proposes a task-oriented approach for the evaluation of driving simulators, roughly based on the general structure of the ICAO standard for the qualification of flight simulators. A catalogue of criteria was developed as a guideline for the evaluator.
