L-band digital aeronautical communications system type 1 (LDACS1) is a cellular air-ground data link intended to operate as inlay deployment on a secondary basis in the frequency band 960-1164 MHz. This implies strict frequency, transmit power and/or spatial separation between LDACS1 and the currently legacy systems in this frequency band. The main primary user of this frequency band is the distance measuring equipment (DME) system. We introduce the theoretical limits for such a separation which enables the co-existence between LDACS1 and the DME system. We take into account the actual geographical distribution of DME ground stations, transmit power and transmit channels of both DME and LDACS1 devices and numerical results obtained from a measurement campaign focused on the interference of LDACS1 upon DME devices. Closed-form expressions are introduced such that the proper operation of DME system is not affected by LDACS1.
