Abstract

The recent advances in mechatronics and robotics have hastened the need for better intention detection in order to improve dexterity for amputees. This thesis examines candidate human machine interfaces for advanced hand prosthetics. The contribution of this thesis can be divided into two distinct parts. The first part involves building a novel, relatively inexpensive device, based on Force Sensing Resistors which can predict single finger forces of amputees; whereas the second part involves a comparison of the aforementioned device and two other previously examined devices which use surface electromyograms and ultrasound images respectively.
