Abstract

This work presents concepts to improve the fire safety of aircraft fuselages made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). For this purpose, the fire performance of composites is studied and possibilities to influence the reaction to fire are considered. Using appropriate materials and construction methods different approaches are described. Selected concepts are manufactured, investigated in fire tests and compared with a reference sample of carbon fibers with an epoxy resin matrix. A list of requirements for a fuselage is developed. Finally, based on the list of requirements and under implementation of an expert survey the solutions are compared and evaluated according to VDI 2225.
