Abstract

It is widely recognized that self-separated free flight has the opportunity to maximize the overall performance of an air traffic management system. Following the SESAR ATM Master Plan [6] airborne separation applications such as Airborne Spacing and Airborne Separation are the necessary steps from today’s ADS-B based Airborne Traffic Situational Awareness to a future Free Flight ATM system based on Self-Separation. This paper describes the first V1 groundside validation conducted in the SESAR project 4.7.6 to assess the feasibility and workload aspects of ASAS Separation applications (ASEP) in the upper European continental airspace.
