Abstract

The paper reports on the design, evaluation and certification qualification of Bird Strike resistant external stores and scientific sensors for the new research aircraft HALO. The structural performance of the external stores was demonstrated by static limit and ultimate load tests. In order to perform the structural design, sizing and the damage modelling of the structures, a comprehensive material test programme had to be carried out. For the nose sections of the external pods of the HALO, bird strike protections concepts had to be developed, realized and validated for certification.
