Abstract
This document is concerned with the FE analysis of the structural behaviour of the lower cover wing in the region of a FTAC during the impact of tyre debris with variable velocity, mass and angle of impact. A deterministic FE model of the lower cover under tyre debris impact was developed and validated, where specific impact scenarios were simulated. These impact simulation tools for prediction of structural damage from tyre debris impact on the ALCAS lower cover are extended here to include stochastic impact analyses. In this way the baseline FE impact model for the lower cover may be used to perform sensitivity studies related to the composite design and impact scenarios using a stochastic approach in order to define failure envelopes for the structure and to examine design improvements. In this report, the stochastic analysis is set up, the statistical variation of the im-portant parameters is defined and stochastic analyses are carried out in order to investigate the correlation between the input parameters and the structural damage. The focus here is on the influence of changes in the impact conditions on the resultant damage in the lower cover, and its effect on structural integrity. The same stochastic methodology could be used in future safety studies to study effects like material and geometrical variability on impact damage.
