The paper describes a modeling methodology using finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate the influence of preloads on the impact damage resistance of composite panels. A material model was implemented for a coupled implicit/explicit analysis in the software package Abaqus FEA. Validation of simulation results against results from impact tests on an unloaded and a preloaded panel showed that the model can capture the trends of material behavior observed in the tests.
