Abstract

This report discusses and characterises the background ionosphere based on GPS derived global ionospheric Maps (GIM). The provided maps are based on a database which is generated using GPS measurements from the International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS) given in the Ionosphere map exchange format (IONEX). The effect of the Faraday rotation in P-band is addressed. Pertaining maps on an averaged year basis at dawn and dusk (6 am and 6 pm) for two years, one at low and the other at high solar states, are generated and displayed. The plots include depiction of the mean TEC, the standard deviation of the TEC, delta TEC, mean Faraday rotation angle, standard deviation of the Faraday rotation, and the delta Faraday rotation angles for different time offsets of 15, 30, and 45 days.
