Abstract

Physical layer enhancements based on position information are investigated in all different components of a cellular wireless communication chain. Today’s adaptive communication systems perform well as long as the coherence time and frequency is sufficient. Communication systems benefit in scenarios with dramatic changes such as turning the corner of the mobile terminal or handovers between different non-cooperative systems from positioning, mobility and navigation information about the mobile user. In this deliverable the framework of these potential improvements is outlined and classified. The investigations that take advantage of the positioning information are synchronization, channel estimation, MIMO techniques for cellular diversity as well as for beamforming and cellular interference coordination.
