Abstract

This contribution presents fuel cell systems project and development approaches and results of DLR in close co-operation with industrial partners and contributing companies. Beginning with a short introduction to the DLR-Institute of Vehicle Concepts (DLR-FK) located in the DLR research centre in Stuttgart a short overview about the ongoing research activities in the area of fuel cell power drive trains is given. This activity is subdivided in three tasks, medium and small scale system concept development and system component development, all tasks are presented with resulting examples of the works. The development line of small PEFC systems for vehicles with an air-cooled and a liquid-cooled system concept is presented by means of a detailed view inside the hardware. An important aspect of this activity is the production-near development of subsystems made from commercially available components and the development of subsystems for the assembly of PEFC systems. System concept and its subsystems are open to the use of fuel cell stacks from different manufacturers in air- or liquid-cooled version. Finally the development of components for fuel cell systems together with industrial companies is presented with examples as they are presented on the DLR booth.
