The braking process in high speed railway disc brakes is subjected to many types of excitation, that are unavoidable at least to some extent and many cause so-called judder vibrations. This fact has to be considered when the brake system is laid out with implies that potential vibration mechanisms have to be well understood. Hence, the motivation of a joined project of Knorr-Bremse, Siemens Mobility and the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics is introduced that comprises a comprehensive multibody simulation study and its comparison to experimental results at the test rig of Knorr-Bremse in Munich. The paper presents the study, discusses its results and reports on new insights in the dynamical behaviour of the complete brake system including its mounting. It turned out that the underlying knowledge is essential for the mechanical layout of brake systems in high-speed trains. The success of this approach could be impressively demonstrated to solve a particular vibration problem in an actual high-speed project.
