Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyze positioning performance utilizing cellular mobile radio systems. In situations where classical satellite based global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) fail due to too many blocked satellites, e.g., in urban canyons, measurements from a cellular system can compensate the missing satellites by providing time-difference of arrival measurements. Simulation results show the potential of a 3GPP-LTE system for complementary support of GNSS in critical environments to improve positioning accuracy and coverage. Further, standalone cellular positioning is of fundamental interest and system functions like handover or radio resource management can benefit from position information for one or several users.
