Abstract
Cellular based traffic monitoring is an upcoming possibility for traffic data collection and incident detection. Such a system uses the already existing infrastructure of cellular networks and can therefore provide a cost effective alternative to conventional systems based on detectors installed in the road network or onboard units carried in individual vehicles. One of its greatest benefits is that it can easily cover wide parts of the road networks without any appreciable investments. In this paper such a cellular based traffic monitoring system, the TrafficOnline-System, is presented. After a short introduction to the research program “TrafficOnline”, the basic principle of this system is explained. Then some results of a field test and an additional simulation are shown.
