The flow field of a new, transonic centrifugal compressor rotor with 586 m/s tip speed has been analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Due to the high speed, the flow was transonic in the rotor inlet region as well as at the diffuser inlet section. The supersonic flow and the related appearance of shocks influence flow range, efficiency and pressure ratio of the machine. Detailed experimental and theoretical flow studies have been carried out in order to get deeper information about these effects. The paper mainly deals with the flow character found at the rotor inlet of the compressor. Laser measurement results and results of 3D-flow calculations are presented.
