Abstract

Against the background of the increasing fragmentation of industrial value chains and the growing importance of services within these chains, it must be expected that freight transport demand is steadily rising. The article focuses on the effects that fragmentation and tertiarisation of the industrial value chain have on freight traffic and the traffic caused by commercial services. Based on the results of two empirical studies by the Institute of Transport Research (DLR-IVF) an insight into particular results is given.
