In this paper, the physical layer design of an OFDM based overlay system is described and discussed. Special focus is put on the physical layer design challenges which have to be solved in order to guarantee co-existence in the same frequency band between a broadband OFDM overlay system and an existing narrowband legacy system. Especially, interference avoidance techniques at the OFDM transmitter as well as narrowband interference suppression techniques at the OFDM receiver are discussed in detail.
