Abstract
This paper summerizes the experience of the DLR in various subdisciplines of smart structures technology and discusses how this joint experience is gathered in order to design smart structures. It is emphasized that only a simultaneous or parallel design process which takes into account all the different aspects of this interdisciplinary technology will give statisfactory results in the design of smart structures.
