Abstract

The Multifunctional Interface shows promise as an important, emerging technology. In this paper, we have sought to lay some basic groundrules applicable to the proper design and development of MFI components with application to the problem of vibration isolation. Although theoretically capable of significant levels of vibration isolation, the MFI is restricted by the small displacements produced by available multifunctional materials. Serial development of the MFI can be useful in cases where inputs are large at some frequencies, but small within the frequency range for which disturbances are problematic. For the latter case, we have developed a framework for controller design and demonstrated the effectiveness of the approach. The controller structure obtained for the fixed-parameter controllers can be used as a baseline for adaptive realizations.
