Abstract

The impact of aeroelastic phenomena and related problems on the design of a new class of super transport aircraft (UHCA) is highlighted. Two key problems are pointed out, namely the adverse effects of static aeroelastic deformations on the controllability of such highly flexible aircraft, and wing-with-engine nacelle flutter. The physical background of these problems is explained, the design concept of an aeroelastic adaptive wing for optimum flight control and aerodynamic performance is outlined, and wing-with-engine nacelle flutter stability boundaries obtained from parametric studies are presented. Finally, some other important dynamic aeroelastic problems are briefly discussed, namely the aeroelastic gust load design problem and aeroservoelastic problems arising with the application of automatic flight control systems using active control technology.
