Abstract

The understanding of helicopter rotor noise - impulsive noise in particular - has recently been substanially furthered through the conduct of several major experimental programs in the course of which a large data base on rotor noise has been acquired. The such programs was founded on the recognition that there existed a fundamental lack in the understanding of the relationship of operational/geometric rotor parameters and the ensuing unsteady aerodynamic pressures as occuring on the blade surface on the one hand, and of the relationship of such blade surface pressures and the resulting rotor acoustic radiation on the other hand. To this end, the European Community recently launched a dedicated research effort within the framework of their"BRITE/EURAM-initative in Aeronautical Research" in the area of rotor aeroacoustics under the acronym "HELINOISE".
