Abstract

A multigrid scheme based on Runge-Kutta time stepping is combined with an Upwind TVD spatial discretization. For hypersonic viscous flow problems the system of discretized equations is stiff which can resultin slow convergence or divergence of the solution. Some numerical techniques to remove stiffness and enhance robustness are discussed in detail. These are local time stepping, viscous eigenvalue residual smoothing and multigrid with semicoarsening. Numerical computations demonstrate the efficiency of the present approach.
