Abstract

Equator-S is a scientific satellite for the investigation of the magnetosphere of the sun under the responsibilty of the Max-Planck- Institute fr Extraterrestrische Physik (MPE) in Garching, Germany. On a highly eccentric orbit it will be spinstabilized with magnetic torquers to controlboth spin rate and spin axis dirction. The torquingmaneuvers will take place within 2.5 earth radii around perigee. After separation from the Ariane-4 launcher the spin rate will be 7 rpm and the spin axis will be close to the equatorial plane. TLhe goals are spin-up to 50 and erection of the spin axis perpendicular to the equatorial plane. The spin rate is controlled bya ring coil which is commanded by an onboard computer using magnet- meter measurements to switch the coil polarity autonoumosly. The morecomplex maneuver are the changes of the spin axix attitude.
