Kurzfassung

Reducing the environmental impact of commercial aircraft exhaust plumes and contrails is a high-priority research goal, prompting efforts to determine the spatial extent of the plume and to quantify the amount of pollutants released into the atmosphere. This paper evaluates the performance of adaptive mesh refinement strategies for hard-to-solve multi-species flow simulations of plume models. This work compares multiple refinement indicators, both feature-based and PDE-based, and it investigates their effectiveness at capturing exhaust plumes. The adaptation process is demonstrated on an exemplary aircraft configuration, i.e. NASA’s Common Research Model. We run a two-species simulation with the flow solver HyperCODA, an extension of the modular flow solver \enquote{CFD for ONERA, DLR and Airbus} (CODA)\footnote{CODA is the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software being developed as part of a collaboration between the French Aerospace Lab ONERA, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Airbus, and their European research partners. CODA is jointly owned by ONERA, DLR and Airbus.}. The code is used in the larger software framework FlowSimulator, thus enabling the combination with a library for hierarchical mesh adaptation, FSAdaptationNG.
