Kurzfassung
Forest structure mapping is investigated in this work using initial P-band data acquired from ESA’s recently launched BIOMASS sensor. First results over a tropical forest in Pará, Brazil, show the excellent radiometric and polarimetric quality of the sensor, where the scattering entropy can effectively be used as a measure of polarimetric coherence. The full polarimetric capabilities are further exploited to extract the forest signal from the ground component. By modelling the ground response as a combination of elementary surface and dihedral contributions, the proposed approach successfully identifies forest areas with distinct structural characteristics.
