Abstract
The German SAR satellites TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X are in orbit since 2007 and 2010, respectively. This pa-per gives an overview about the current TanDEM-X 4D mission phase. It also reports about the challenges faced by such long-enduring missions. Two measures are taken to preserve the satellites and to continue the mission as long as possible. On the one hand, the formation settings are optimized to save propellant. On the other side, a reduction of the transmit duty cycle to reduce the load on the battery was assessed considering also the impact of this reduction on the performance of the DEMs. With these measures, the satellites are expected to acquire accu-rate, high quality SAR and DEM data for several more years.
