Abstract

The flame anchoring within the Liquid Upper Stage Demonstrator Engine (LUMEN) combustion chamber is investigated for different operational points characterized by chamber pressure, injection temperatures and mixture ratios. The flame emission was captured by optimized optical probes integrated into the main combustion chamber wall next to the injection plane. Measures to influence the flame anchoring during start-up until shut-down in modified versions of the injector head are assessed in several test campaigns at the P8 test bench at the DLR Institute of Space Propulsion. The flame anchoring is demonstrated experimentally, ensuring the throttleability of the LUMEN demonstrator engine for re-usability and lander applications.
