Abstract

Empirical data underpin transport planning and require reliability, transparency, and reproducibility. Since the FGSV’s German guideline “Recommendation for Empirical Methods in Transport” (EVE) was published in 2012, survey practice has changed substantially through electronic data collection (e.g., smartphone-based tracking), increased computing power, and new data sources such as mobile phone data - raising new questions about accuracy, comparability, and data protection. As the EVE is currently being revised, a central challenge is deciding which established and emerging methods should be recommended, given the long-term influence of the guideline. This paper outlines the planned structure and content of the revised EVE, with a focus on new tracking and participatory approaches and updated data protection requirements, and invites input from the ISCTSC community to incorporate international best practice.
