Abstract

Variable Cycle Engines (VCEs) are pivotal in addressing he operational challenges of modern supersonic and military aircraft. Their adaptability enables optimization across a diverse range of flight conditions, from subsonic cruise to supersonic speeds, providing operational flexibility beyond conventional engine designs. The proposed article outlines advancements in VCE technology, tracing its evolution from early research in the 1960s to current applications. It explores various VCE configurations, such as the core-driven fan and selective bleed engines, highlighting their design principles, advantages, and limitations. Emphasis is placed on the integration of variable turbines and compressors, which enhance engine efficiency, thrust, and thermal management while minimizing fuel consumption and environmental impact. By evaluating contemporary research and ongoing development programs like the Adaptive Engine Transition Program (AETP), the article aims to provide insights into the future potential of VCEs in advancing propulsion technology.
