Abstract

The Lagrangian Model for Efficient Trajectory Transport in the Atmosphere (LaMETTA) is an on-line Lagrangian model system within the ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic model system (ICON), implemented as submodel in the Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy). Such Lagrangian trajectory models are used for various scientific applications in atmospheric dynamics and chemistry. With the on-line application of LaMETTA, it leverages the native spatial and temporal resolution of ICON, offering significant advantages over the off-line application relying on gridded output data with limited temporal resolution. We address the challenges and solutions with optimising LaMETTA for highly parallelised computing systems, particularly in terms of efficient inter-process communication and reduced memory footprint. Moreover, we provide an outlook on an upcoming DLR project focused on atmospheric dispersion modelling of wildfires, where LaMETTA will be applied on regional scales.
