Abstract
An overview is given on the DLR projects "Virtual Tower" and "Remote Tower Operation Research". These projects aim at replacing the airport tower by a closed control center with replacement of the direct far view out of the tower windows by means of a high resolution augmented vision video panorama including zoom functions and replay possibility. As a near term goal remote tower operation (RTO) adresses the remote control of small airports and movement areas not directly visible from the tower position. The design of the RTO controller's workplace and the integration into the local tower work environment is based on a work and task analysis and simulation of work processes using a formal model which is realized with hierarchically structured colored Petri nets.
