Abstract

In the quest for more sustainable and user-friendly transportation, shared automated mobility on-demand (SAMOD) is a promising concept. When boarding the shared automated shuttles at flexible, unmarked pick-up locations, so called virtual stops (vStop), users need to walk a short distance and require assistance on their mobile device. Since the pick-up scenarios are crucial to ensure high operational service quality, the vStop human-machine interface (vStop HMI) provides users with information directly in reference to the environment using means of augmented reality. Thus, the vStop HMI helps users to contribute to efficient SAMOD operation and hence, potentially fosters overall user experience and eventually acceptance of SAMOD in the future. Spanning three research publications, this dissertation describes the iterative user-centered design and evaluation of a vStop HMI design concept that helps users in the context of a future SAMOD user journey.
