Abstract

This study explores the application of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in cryosphere research, focusing on glaciers, permafrost, and snow-covered regions. Utilizing advanced SAR techniques - such as polarimetry, interferometry, PolInSAR, and tomography - the research aims to capture detailed surface and subsurface characteristics across diverse Arctic and Alpine test sites. Through airborne campaigns with DLR’s F-SAR sensor, multi-frequency data is used to refine algorithms, validate results against other datasets, and enhance glaciological insights. Specifically, the study addresses snow-water equivalent (SWE) changes, permafrost soil analysis, and subsurface ice structures. This approach may support an improved monitoring and prediction of cryospheric changes, offering a valuable tool in understanding climate change impacts on these sensitive regions.
