Driver Customized Navigation

Abstract

Navigation systems support the driver to prevent the driver from excessive workload in different traffic situations. An increase in driver strain occurs, for example, when navigating an unknown area or driving on congested roads. Today such workload is reduced by a navigation system which proposes a route to the driver and guides him with uniform planning algorithms based on the fastest or shortest route optimisation. Some of the newer systems use traffic data from the Traffic Management Channel (TMC) to avoid congested roads as well. None of the navigation systems use individual driver preferences for route planning to decrease personal driver strain. To make driving safer and simpler the assistance systems have to support the driver individually according to his preferences. At the Institute of Transportation Systems of the German Aerospace Centre, studies were conducted with more than 250 participants to gain more information about driver preferences. The aims of our research are the improvement of traffic safety, the utilization of the road network and the acceptance of the navigation aid by individual route proposals.
