Empirical insights on residential location and mode choices of commuters depending on household type and teleworking options

This study investigates the residential and commuting preferences of German commuters, with a focus on household types and the increasing role of teleworking. It is based on an online survey with a representative sample for the German working population and incorporates two discrete choice experiments. The first analyzes residential preferences considering housing cost, size, and commuting duration, with and without teleworking. The second focuses on commuting mode choices (car, bike, public transport), examining cost and time factors. A mixed logit models were used to analyze the data. The study reveals how teleworking influences preferences for longer commutes and how different household types prioritize commuting modes. These insights are useful for developing sustainable commuting strategies by considering the trade-offs between residential choices and commuting behavior.
