Abstract

Bird strike is a dimensioning load case for fans of aero engines. Due to its safety implications for an aircraft, the engines resilience against impact and ingestion of this foreign object needs to be shown for certification along airworthiness requirements. The given publication presents the work on automatically building finite element models with sufficient degree of detail. The objective is to analyse the dynamic loading by bird strike in a concept and preliminary design phase. The modelling approach includes both the rotating structure as well as non-rotating neighbouring structures. The pre- and post-processing for explicit finite element analysis is presented with focus on contributing to the overall engine design process of an example UHBR fan. This integrates into the development and collaboration platform GTlab.
