Abstract

This paper presents a solution, coined TriHex, to implement an antenna array in space, of virtually unlimited size, using multiple spacecraft in a particular orbital arrangement. To achieve this, it is necessary that the relative position of the spacecraft is accurately controlled and measured, a common local oscillator is generated, high-rate raw data are sent among the spacecraft and an approach for in-orbit calibration of the array is provided. The disciplines involved behind this concept are diverse and interlaced: from precise propulsion, orbital mechanics and GNSS relative navigation, through innovative techniques to achieve clock coherence, to novel inter-satellite link and operational concepts. The driving goal is the obtention of L-band brightness temperature images of the Earth at a spatial resolution better than 10 km.
