Kurzfassung
A journey is more than the connection between starting point and destination. Each person, each cargo passes through several stations until it reaches the desired destination. In addition, each journey can be divided into at least one section, in which also different stations have to be passed. These stations can pass through similar or comparable processes despite the different transport modes and their dimensions. While the passenger waits at the airport security checkpoint for the screening of the hand luggage at the customs control, the cargo container at the port is also checked by customs officials. Ultimately, both checks and processes have the same objective, namely to investigate the traveling person and the transporting container, in other words the agent, for illicit items. It is evident that the temporal start and end points of these processes should be given a similar designation. The idea of dividing journeys in milestones frames a concept for research of interdependencies and interactions between planning and execution of travel chains from the infrastructure owners and travelers points of view.
