Abstract

A new non-invasive, optical technique to measure in situ the fraction solid during solidification is presented. The technique utilizes the extreme properties of transparent silica aerogels. The technique is tested on a directionally solidified technical AlSiMg alloy. The measured fraction solid as a function of temperature agrees well with model of Scheil
