Abstract

Joining of thermoplastic composites is an important step in manufacturing of aerospace structures. It is becoming more relevant since thermoplastic polymers are increasingly used to replace metallic counterparts. Continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic laminates have shown stable capabilities as material for current aircraft components. Fusion bonding or welding has increasing potential for joining and assembling thermoplastic components. It can reduce overall manufacturing costs and is expected to replace traditional joining methods like mechanical fastening. However, there are disadvantages associated with these methods such as inclusion of particles or stress concentration at the edge of the weld joint. The latter can induce crack initiation and thereby failure of the welded part. The focus of this thesis is to develop an automated technique for the modification of welding joints such as edge sealings of welded components. The deposited material of the sealing is the same as the matrix material in the laminate in order to achieve good bonding and a potential load transfer. The tool is designed to process high performance thermoplastics. In this case polyphenylene sulfide (PPS).
