Abstract

This paper reports about our experimental and numerical investigations of forced and self-sustained oscillations of a supercritical airfoil section in transonic flow. Heave and pitch motion were examined. The unsteady pressure distributions were recorded and for some cases compared with Navier-Stokes simulations; the agreement was good below the buffet limit. In addition, the results of direct flutter experiments and a calculation in the frequency were compared; the descending branch of the "Transonic Dip" could be reproduced well. Another important result was, that all transonic flutter cases ended in limit cycle oscillations.
