Abstract
A number of large satellites, utilizing the increased transport capabilities of the new ARIANE-5 launcher, is presently under development by the European Space Agency ESA. Due to the enlarged size category, the mechanical verification and qualification rises new challenges for test methods and facilities as well as for the mathematical modelling. A comparative survey is given on the mechanical vibration tests performed on three large satellites. The main topic is the structural dynamic identification by means of Modal Survey Testing. The test requirements are discussed and compared with the actual test results. Improvements are proposed especially with respect to correlation and updating of the respective mathematical models. Finally, the possible contribution of high level Modal Survey Testing at qualification level is discussed, which may be a backup solution in cases where the limits of existing vibration test facilities are exceeded by the spacecraft size.
