Abstract

This work deals with the thermal joining of scarfed thermoplastic composite structures using infrared technology and shows a systematic approach to process development. The design and validation of a test setup and the production of the scarfed specimens form the basis for subsequent experimental investigations. From the results of the first preliminary tests, a test plan is derived to narrow the process window and to select an optimal material combination. The knowledge gained from these tests is incorporated into a regression analysis with the aim of numerically demonstrating the interactions between essential process parameters and selected target values. The work is concluded by the transfer of the determined relationships into a physical context. It could be shown that the process provides a large number of indirect factors that massively influence the joint quality. The test results show a large scatter range and thus no reproducibility, so that the application of the mathematical model formed is limited to future investigations for process optimization.
