Abstract

Recent numerical flow simulations for the lifting body X-38 are presented. The results address code verification and the analysis of criterical aerodynamic and aerothermal phenomena along the reentry trajectory. The potential of numerical aerodynamic optimization is investigated by using an advanced capsule shape as a test bed.
