Abstract

The progress made in the past decade at the development of field measurement techniques, such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) allows to provide experimental data of much high quality and accuracy for validation of numerical codes than has been possible before. However, there are a number of properties of the measurement techniques which must be well understood, also for the people doing the numerical calculations, to be able to better understand and assess the experimental results. Moreover, some restrictions imposed on the experimental techniques due to technological restrictions have to be understood, for better planning of experiments intended to validate numerical codes. This paper will briefly outline some of the characteristics of these modern measurement methods in order to initiate discussion and efforts for better planning of future cooperation between experimentalists and numerical people.
