Although the number of casualties in car accidents in Europe has steadily decreased over the past decade, the number of accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists has almost stagnated in this same period. The automotive industry has put high efforts in developing passive and active safety systems inside their cars to protect these vulnerable road users. With increasing digitalization and connectivity between vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and infrastructure new concepts for vulnerable road user protection become possible. This speech will present the technological advances and current trends in vulnerable road user protection and introduce key technologies that are currently under research and bear the potential to drastically reduce accidents with cyclists and pedestrians in future.
